The Akarana story: Akaranas hull a Farr 1104 was trucked from Compass yachts Sydney in October 1976, and then fitted out in Townsville by the current owner Ian Hamilton. The hull was state of the art in those days, being fibreglass foam sandwich, with a steel frame- since reconstructed in laminated hardwood. Designed strictly to IOR standards as a rule beater by Bruce Farr. She was launched in 1977 in time for the annual Easter Ocean race Tville Dunk Island which she won. Rated as one ton IOR, she then went on as to win the Mooloolaba 79 SCOR series, followed by successes in the inaugural Gladstone to Cairns and then Cairns to Moresby races. Up till 1993 Akarana had completed 5 Moresby races, usually in the minor places except for losing her rudder in 1981, and having to use bucket steering. Akarana has been a regular competitor in TYC races, with moderate results, as newer designs and lighter boats show her up. Over the years has sustained some damage the short list - 5 booms 3 masts 3 motors 2 rudders. Akarana was a first fleeter in Hamiton Island Race week in 1984. Akarana competed in the inaugural MIRW in 2007, winning PHS, and as the Barbie boat in 2009, Cowboys in 2010, 1970s Rock Stars in 2011, Sexy Pirates in 2013, and Mexican Fiesta in 2015 at MIRW what is in store for 2016?. 2013 saw a changing of the guard, with Vicki Hamilton, Ians daughter taking up the skippering duties. Vicki and other TYC crew competed in the Australian Womens Keelboat Regatta in Melbourne in June 2016, more recently Akarana competed in the 2018 Port Douglas Race Week.
