Designed and built in 1958/59 Cherana has the classic lines of an ocean racing thoroughbred
and can truly be described as part of Australia’s ocean racing heritage.
Cherana placed 1st overall in the 1959 Sydney to Hobart, continuing on to win races on all
handicap systems, RORC, IOR and IMS. Between 1970 and 1996 Cherana accumulated a total
of 24 divisional offshore point score winds at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, which has
the world wide reputation as being Australia’s premier and competitive ocean racing club.
Cherana placed 1st overall in the Brisbane to Gizo Solomons Race in 2001. Today, Cherana is owned and raced by Euan MacDonald, Principle of Australiawide Boat Sales and can be regularly seen racing from Manly QLD.
Although a shoal draft full keeled yacht Cherana still manages to turn heads and overtake the occasional modern racing yacht, She had cruised extensively
and is an Australian registered ship.
Described by her designer, Alan Payne, as “…..arguably my most successful yacht” she was
built by Trevor Gowland the builder of other Hobart winners, Anitra V and Freya as well as
many other famous yachts such as the 12 meter Gretel, Ballyhoo, Gingo, Apollo’s II & III,
Ququee, Norla etc.
