FACTS 1.Approaching the weather mark to round to starboard, with SM616 on starboard tack and SM600 on port tack on a converging course. 2.SM600 luffed, passed head to wind in an effort to tack to starboard. 3.SM600 stalled while tacking and slowed. 4.SM616 was initially unaware of SM600s position and when they did see her, SM616 altered course to windward in an attempt to avoid contact. 5.The bow of SM616 made contact with the starboard stern of SM600. 6.Both boats retired from the race. 7.There were no injuries. CONCLUSIONS 1.The damage to SM600 was considered serious. 2.SM600 broke RRS13 and 14 3.SM616 by not keeping a lookout failed to do everything reasonably possible to avoid contact and broke RRS14 (Case 107) |
